With Treedom you finance farmers who want to plant trees, supporting their work in the early years, when trees are not yet productive. Treedom provides farmers with know-how and technical support for planting and managing trees. Trees are photographed, geolocated and monitored by Treedom over time. Treedom directly finances small agroforestry projects throughout the territory. The philosophy is to realize sustainable ecosystems and allow thousands of farmers to support the initial costs of planting new trees, ensuring food autonomy and income opportunities over time. The realization of small agroforestry systems allows making precise choices in relation to the specific characteristics and needs of each project area. The tree species planted are native or respect the biodiversity of the different territories. The agroforestry practice also integrates the planting of trees in an agricultural system, favoring the virtuous interaction between the different species and a sustainable use of resources and land. Finally, all trees absorb CO2 in the course of their growth, naturally generating a benefit for the entire planet. Treedom finances projects in rural communities in the south of the world and also carries out projects with a strong social value in Italy. The first step is the training and financing of the communities involved in the projects, obtaining extraordinary results in terms of their own empowerment. The trees and their fruits belong to the farmers, allowing them to diversify and supplement their income and in some cases to launch micro-entrepreneurship initiatives. Financing the planting of new trees with Treedom serves to support the trees' care in the first years of their life, when they are not yet productive in terms of fruit. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations Development Program to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all in the context of a new sustainable development agenda. With our tree planting activities in Asia, Africa, South America and Italy, Treedom contributes to the achievement of 10 Objectives to ensure a sustainable future. In fact, with Treedom a tree is much more than a tree.

Eden Reforestation Projects (Eden) was conceptualized in 2005 when Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn, invited Dr. Stephen Fitch to take over an abandoned nursery and forest restoration project along the Udo Escarpment near Hawassa, Ethiopia. Hailemariam Desalegn was then the President of the Southern People’s Region of Ethiopia. Dr. Fitch, who had personally seen massive tracts of land decimated by deforestation, accepted the Prime Minister’s offer and began developing and implementing what would eventually become Eden’s unique Employ to Plant methodology: provide sustainable employment to local people to restore and protect their natural environment. People from the local community at Gallo Argesi were hired as the workforce, and within the first year of operation, over 200,000 trees were planted. By the end of the project in 2012, over 15 million trees had been planted by over 3,500 Eden employees. By addressing the link between deforestation and extreme poverty, Eden has developed an effective model for reforestation. Its international efforts have since expanded into other continents and developing countries. Nurseries and reforestation projects with locally-hired employees have been established in Madagascar, Haiti, Nepal, Indonesia, Mozambique, Kenya, Nicaragua, and Honduras. Since its establishment, Eden has planted more than 583 million trees across its project nations, with approximately 20 million trees added each month. Eden’s global restoration network is creating livelihoods for millions of people living in extreme poverty by empowering them to restore and protect forests on a massive scale.

A friend and I started this little side project to help people plant trees while in lockdown. It was called Plantyflix back then. The whole point was to help keep people thinking about the environment and give people a way to take action on this bigger crisis we still face stuck at home on the couch. Little did we think that we'd even plant a hundred trees, let alone thousands! But here we are. Super happy with how it went. However, the question is now — how can we plant even more trees? And how can we do it in such a way that encourages even more people to plant for every tree planted? Enter the Treeferral referral program. The aim is in the name. The whole point of Treeferral is one awesome little tree planting referral program for trees. As you may have read above already, you plant trees, you refer a friend, and you earn 40% of every payment they make for planting trees for as long as they're signed up. Plus, we'll plant 10x trees for your mate to get them started. It's quite literally a triple win. Win for you, win for your friend, and of course a win for nature and the planet, woo! We’ve partnered with Eden Reforestation Project to help us with the tree planting part. These guys have planted over 450+ million trees and counting in countries such as Madagascar, Indonesia, Mozambique, Nepal, Haiti, Kenya and Central America. Not only does every tree planted help restore the native ecology, environment and improve the land. But also provides financial support to people and communities living in extreme poverty. So come and join us! Let's plant forests and more forests together and reach the goal of planting 1 million trees. Let's go!

Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) is a leading Section 21 Non-Profit Organisation that addresses food security, environmental sustainability, and greening. We have a large and diverse programme portfolio, which you can explore here. Our ethos is one of efficiency, transparency, and accountability. We run our non-profit like a business / social enterprise and continue to innovate in the space. This approach has led to us being one of the best social development organisations on the continent. After nearly thirty years of experience, we understand what it takes to achieve real, long-term sustainability and want to make a positive difference to the lives of all South Africans. Food security — particularly in the context of global climate change — is one of the most important issues of our time. The World Food Summit of 1996 defined food security as existing when all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet the dietary needs for a productive and healthy life. A lack of food security, within any tier of our society, will lead to instability and impact everyone. Therefore, it is a collective act of social justice that we work towards making food insecurity a thing of the past. At Food & Trees for Africa, we take a broad view of food security which includes both income and non-income producing agriculture, small and large scale projects, as well as additional elements of the water-energy-food security nexus. We practice bio-intensive agriculture (in its many forms) including agro-ecology, permaculture, conservation and rehabilitation agriculture, and natural farming. This doesn’t mean we farm without science or practicality — in fact, quite the opposite. We just take a longer-term view on soil health, improving the energy of a system, and maximising its productivity with bio-inputs. It’s all the rage these days — but we’ve been doing it since the 90s.

Our vision is of a revitalised wild forest in the Highlands of Scotland, providing space for wildlife to flourish and communities to thrive. The Trees for Life mission is to rewild the Scottish Highlands by enabling the restoration of the globally unique Caledonian Forest which once covered much of Scotland. Integral to our success is the involvement of people. We are an ambitious charity with a big mission. For over 25 years we have sought to bring innovation to conservation, and we continue to strive for new and ground-breaking ways to rewild the Scottish Highlands. We are an open, friendly and cooperative organisation. We welcome and encourage collaborative working with other organisations, landowners and the wider community. We believe we can always achieve more through teamwork. We seek prudent, sustainable solutions in everything we do. We are always mindful of our duty to our supporters, our volunteers, our staff and above all to Scotland’s wild forest. Seeking a pragmatic approach safeguards our organisation and the work we undertake. Trees for Life recognised that the Caledonian Forest is more than trees, but an intricate web of life, that should include the full range of wildlife that originally grew there. This includes large predators such as wolf and lynx, forest grazers such as wild cattle and special plants such as twinflower. The charity has returned red squirrels to forests in the North West Highlands where the animal had not lived for over 50 years, and it has sought to bring back beavers to rivers and lochs that are its natural home. This is because without the full web of life that make up the forest, it cannot thrive and grow naturally. Trees for Life is now working to ensure the Caledonian Forest grows from the last patches of the original wild forest that remain, so it can grow again in large areas of Scotland. The charity is also seeking to ensure the wild forest can grow at a scale that enables rewilding to happen, so nature can look after itself, especially around Glen Affric and Glenmoriston where it has worked for many years.

It all started in 1999 with a vision to create a space where people could live and learn together in an ecologically sustainable environment. We share the story through the people that were part of shaping it. In 2019 the Sustainability Institute is celebrating its 20-year anniversary. We reflect back on this amazing journey, and share our story as told by some of the people that made all of this possible. When the Institute started in 1999, there were not many trees and wildlife around. To restore the natural ecosystem and to create a green space protected from any buildings or development, a piece of land was put aside for an indigenous woodland. Over the past 16 years our students, guided by the vision of our woodland custodian Bryce Anderson and Fumanekile Qhinga, have helped to plant trees and shrubs that have grown into this beautiful, peaceful woodland. Today it is flourishing and what was once a barren space, is growing into a dense forest of trees and shrubs. The woodlands provide an opportunity for solitude and connection to nature. The design of the Sustainability Institute was done by keeping in mind how available local resources could be incorporated into the infrastructure, how existing infrastructure could be reused and how the natural elements could be used to cool and heat the buildings. Take a look at how it all came together, as explained by the original architect, Gita Goven. The SI is committed to putting children at the heart of what we do. Education is a right for all children and our core work focuses on enabling access to quality education for children from the Lynedoch Valley. This is our third video which focuses on the various programmes related to the children and youth. You will get a glimpse into the Lynedoch Children’s House, SPARK Primary school, the Youth Hub programme and Lynedoch United Football Club. The Lynedoch Eco-Village is a mixed community organised around a child-centered learning precinct. It strives to be a working example of a liveable ecologically designed urban system that is self-sustainable. Above all else, the Lynedoch Eco-Village provides a safe space where South Africans from all backgrounds can live in peace with each other and in harmony with nature. In our fifth video, we share some reflections from residents. The Sustainability Institute hosts programmes designed to challenge conventional thinking and open minds to new ways of doing and approaching the known while incorporating the entire space at the Institute as part of the learning experience. Take a look at the different educational programmes we have been offering since 2003. Food brings people together. At the SI we not only prepare delicious locally sourced organic food, but our food garden provides fresh vegetables and herbs used in daily meals for the children, students, and guests. We reconnect people with where food comes from, and our food garden and approach to food serves as a beautiful living-learning environment.

Trees for Life is an iconic WILDLANDS’ project that sees the education about and growing of indigenous trees on a large scale. Essentially, people from disadvantaged communities grow and barter trees with WILDLANDS in exchange for livelihood support items or cash – giving them the ability to “grow” themselves out of poverty and provide for their families. The trees are then planted into restoration sites that contribute to our climate change mitigation and adaptation work. The WILDLANDS Ecological Restoration project, with support from the Department of Environmental Affairs: Natural Resource Management (NRM) aims to restore degraded forest (using the trees grown by WILDLANDS Tree-preneurs), grasslands, savanna and fynbos landscapes combating land degradation and adapting South Africa’s landscape to be better prepared for climate change. Through revegetation and improved management of landscapes we work to re-establish ecosystem function and resilience. WILDLANDS has networks in 60 communities across KwaZulu-Natal, Western, Northern & Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Gauteng, transforming the lives of thousands of South Africans and improving their livelihoods through innovative sustainable programs. Our WILDLANDS programme is structured around three integrated pillars, namely our Wildlife Economy, Ecological Restoration and Sustainable Communities’ interventions. With a core focus on inclusive growth, the WILDLANDS programme is improving the lives of thousands of South Africans whilst restoring and conserving the natural environment that supports them.

We are a self funding Not for Profit organisation founded in 1979 (formerly known as Men of The Trees). We have planted more than 15 million native trees & understory to improve biodiversity, combat salinity and soil erosion. Members, sponsors, donors, community and corporate volunteers have been part of this important work. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago – the second-best time is RIGHT NOW, so make a tax-deductible donation today – every dollar goes to our tree planting programs! Men of the Trees was founded in Kenya on 22 July 1922. Richard St Barbe Baker, a forestry officer in the colonial service, was employed to issue timber felling licences. But he had a conscience about the forests. He undertook long safaris through the rain forests to assess the annual increment of the trees with commercial value. He would never issue licences that allowed the forest to be cut other than on a sustained yield basis. His research took him to the great bamboo forests and then eventually into the northern highlands of Kenya. Here he found a devastating situation. Instead of the lush tropical forests, he found sparse scrubland. Here, the native Kikuyu people followed the practise of ‘slash and burn’ agriculture. The land soon ceased to produce crops and the people would be forced to move on, clearing more scrub to grow their food and not restoring the cleared areas. St Barbe held conferences with the tribal elders, and eventually they agreed that trees were valuable and that the way to improve their land and avoid mass starvation was to revegetate. This great work began with a great Dance—the Dance of the Trees. That first great dance drew the participation of 3,000 Moran warriors. But before he would allow the dance to proceed, St Barbe chose 50 volunteers who would become the first ’Watu wa Miti’ – Men of the Trees. Each member took a solemn oath to serve the principles of planting and caring for trees in order to save their land from desertification. Each upheld that promise, and the secret password ‘TWAHAMWE’ meaning “we are all one”. Today, this idea has spread worldwide. Men of the Trees is now active in many countries, including two mainland states in Australia. In Western Australia, the Society has been active since 1979 and is now known as Trillion Trees. Today more than 2000 members and volunteers collectively grow and plant tens of thousands of trees in a season. In Western Australia, we dedicate our greatest efforts to improving biodiversity and combating salinity & soil erosion by planting native trees and understory. Men of the Trees WA was renamed as Trillion Trees in 2017.

Kloof Conservancy, founded in 1993, is an active, vibrant organisation run by volunteers who aim to promote environmental awareness and conserve our area’s outstanding natural heritage for present and future generations. Special attention is paid to habitat restoration, invasive alien plant (IAP) eradication, sustainable living issues, environmental education, public participation and outreach to previously disadvantaged neighbouring communities as a part of a process of expanding the “green footprint”. We believe that the efforts and contributions of people and businesses are key to the sustainability of conservation in Kloof. Kloof Conservancy relies on its community of members and its relationship with the community at large to further its goals. The conservancy aims to be a friendly and cooperative organisation. We aim to be outspoken in our environmental advocacy on a local level, and if required, on a regional or national level. We also aim to foster effective communication with our members, other environmental organisations, and the broader public. Kloof Conservancy has an operational strategy which relies on its membership as a whole, but requires individuals and small teams to run or contribute to various projects. In addition, we aim to work with like-minded organisations in partnerships, whereby we can leverage the partners skills sets to jointly achieve more than what we could if we operated on our own. We aim to be innovative in strategies and projects, and easily identifiable to the public as an effective, local environmental organisation.

Founded in 1972 –the centennial of the first Arbor Day observance– the Arbor Day Foundation is the largest 501(c)3 nonprofit membership organization dedicated to planting trees. More than 1 million members, supporters, and valued partners have helped them plant more than 350 million trees in neighborhoods, communities, cities, and forests throughout the world to ensure a greener and healthier future for everyone. The vision of the Arbor Day Foundation is to help others understand and use trees as a solution to many of the global issues we face today, including air quality, water quality, a changing climate, deforestation, poverty, and hunger. The impact they make on our world is accomplished through their conservation and education programs. They work to restore forests, improve tree cover in communities, and inspire the next generation of tree planters to ensure this important work endures. The Arbor Day Foundation has been inspiring people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees since 1972. And that simple mission has had a global impact. The Foundation has grown over the last 50 years to become the largest member nonprofit organization dedicated to planting trees. And in that time, we have worked with members, supporters, and a strong network of partners to plant and distribute nearly 500 million trees worldwide. But our work is far from over. We plant trees because people need trees. And when planted in the right place, they have great impact. Trees help slow climate change, filter our air and water, foster biodiversity, and strengthen our communities. They create the kind of transformational change the world needs now. With your help, we can plant trees today for a better tomorrow. Trees are a key part of the solution to some of the biggest issues facing our planet. That’s why we have dedicated the last 50 years to planting trees in forests and communities around the world. And with the help of our extensive partner network, we can ensure that this work is focused where it can make the biggest impact. Trees help slow climate change, foster biodiversity, improve our communities, and provide a stronger future for everyone. It is critical that we continue planting at scale, now more than ever before. Thanks to our strong connection with planting partners, the Arbor Day Foundation can keep pace with the increasing need — while consistently ensuring that the right trees are planted in the right places.

Planting trees is complex work. Not only from a technical point of view – skills and resources are needed to create suitable places for small trees to germinate and grow – but also, and above all, from a strategic point of view. Planting trees is not enough, they must be supported in their growth. This means thinking in the medium and long term, and for this you need to find the right tree for the right place and the right purpose. The projects we carry out for the planting of our trees respond exactly to these needs. Environmental benefits An initial key aspect that we take into account when we develop our projects is the potential to bring about environmental benefits, at both a local and global level. Local environmental benefits: Our work, which integrates tree cultivation into agricultural settings, aims to deliver the maximum benefits to the ecosystem in which it is carried out. Each project has its own distinct characteristics and therefore different areas in which tree planting can have positive effects, but the most common of these are: combating soil erosion, enriching biodiversity, protecting soil fertility, creating sustainable ecosystems, etc. Global environmental benefits: During its lifetime, every tree absorbs CO2 (carbon dioxide) from the atmosphere and stores it in its woody parts. This process removes CO2 from the atmosphere, and its effects are greater the longer the trees are allowed to grow and live. Social and economic benefits It is equally important that our work is able to deliver social benefits to the local communities that participate in our projects and bring them to life. Funding, community building, training and technical assistance are the fundamental steps in starting each new project. Above all, it is crucial that communities derive direct benefits from trees in terms of food resources and economic opportunities. They are the keepers of the trees, they will enjoy their fruits. How it works Telling the story of what goes on in our projects, the local farming communities, the trees and all the commitment behind it is an integral part of our work. We do this through the web pages that every tree we plant has on our platform. And we do this through images, words and videos. Like these, we've collected here for you, so you can see... how it works! We believe that throwing 100 seeds in a field does not mean planting 100 trees. And we believe that intensively planting a single species is not a sustainable and biodiversity-friendly choice. We believe that communities of people living in a given place are the best custodians of trees, so we support them financially and help them to plant and grow trees on their land. The trees will benefit them, the place where they live and the whole planet. We believe in the bond that, through trees and thanks to Treedom, can be created between distant people. We believe that each and every one of us must make an effort to reduce our CO2 emissions, and in doing so we can also help to absorb them by planting trees. We believe that we can make this planet greener. And we want to do it in the right way.

Increasing a city’s tree canopy contributes to lowering urban temperatures by blocking shortwave radiation and increasing water evaporation. Creating more comfortable microclimates, trees also mitigate air pollution caused by everyday urban activities. Their absorptive root systems also help avoid floods during severe rains and storm surges. So overall, trees are pretty awesome. Cities around the world are recognizing this and many are developing strategies to increase green canopy cover. In fact, in 2015, the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Agenda Council (GAC) on the Future of Cities included increasing green canopy cover on their list of top ten urban initiatives: “Cities will always need large—infrastructure projects, but sometimes small—scale infrastructure—from cycle lanes and bike sharing to the planting of trees for climate change adaptation—can also have a big impact on an urban area.” As cities around the world race to implement green canopy strategies, we’ve developed a metric—the Green View Index—by which to evaluate and compare canopy cover. In collaboration with the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on the Future of Cities and the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers community, we will continue to grow this database to span cities all over the globe. Treepedia is not about rating cities to compete in a green olympics. Treepedia aims to raise a proactive awareness of urban vegetation improvement, using computer vision techniques based on Google Street View images. Our focus is on street trees: Treepedia doesn't map parks, as GSV doesn't venture into them as it does on average streets. Of course, parks are an essential component of urban vegetation. But have you ever wondered how sustainable your street or neighborhood is? Does your city need more efforts to make the streets greener? Did you know that you can also contribute by joining a bottom-up approach instead of waiting for things to be done by politicians and planners

Forest for the Trees is a feature documentary film (release date May 2021) and a book published by Dewi Lewis UK (due Fall 2021) and fine art photographs The Tree Planters and Enchanted Forests represented by the Stephen Bulger Gallery. Forest for the Trees is a visually told story through the vast landscapes of clear-cut logging and reforestation and through the stories of a community of one hundred tree planters. A world most people will never see for themselves; it captures tree planting by hand in remote and majestic locations in Canada. Planting trees one at a time is the overarching metaphor of how we can achieve things we think are impossible: reforesting the earth one tree at a time, getting through life's challenges one day at a time, and making a film one picture at a time.

Most business issues stem from poor communication, so I feel a responsibility to keep everyone on the same page. I am results-oriented, constantly checking in with the goal to determine how close or how far away we are and what it will take to make it happen. I find this pressure inspiring and a great motivator for the rest of the team. I am highly organized. I always take notes, and I use a series of tools to help myself stay on top of deadlines. I like to keep a clean workspace and create a logical filing method so I’m always able to find what I need. I find this increases efficiency and helps the rest of the team stay on track, too. I’m a people-person. I love meeting new people and learning about their lives and their backgrounds. I can almost always find common ground with strangers, and I like making people feel comfortable in my presence.
